Responsibility

Do you remember your first shift as a licensed pharmacist? Do you remember what it was like to officially be responsible for a human life? Here’s the student view:

Responsibility

I think the idea of graduation
Brings happiness but also intimidation
Because as much as we yearn, and work toward that goal
It's a big responsibility to have and to hold

Taking another's life in your hands
Feeling the weight of a thousand pounds land
And settle on your shoulders like a ton of bricks
It's all up to you and a couple of mouse-clicks

And yes there are safeguards to help and guide you
But you can't replace a human who thinks like I do
At the end of the day, it's you who decides
And your decision can affect who lives and who dies

I think we're all afraid of the day we graduate
But we don't worry, we anticipate
We prepare and we work to learn how to do right
At the exorbitant cost of many a sleepless night

We study and we focus and even memorize
Because it's all in the details and those details save lives
That's what we all set out to do
And graduation day will be our debut

One day we won't be students anymore
Many of us will work in community drugstores
Some of us will be educators, teaching the next generation
Some of us will go for a residency to further our education

Seasoned veterans with years of practice or student pharmacists awaiting our turn
No matter the time or place, it's always good to learn
All of us will one day be responsible for others, so now is the time to prepare
It's never too early or too late to be providers of patient care
